INDIANAPOLIS – August 13, 2014 - Don Snemis, Commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), recently announced that the BMV will for the first time begin offering the written portion of the driver’s test in 11 foreign languages, including Japanese, in branches that have Automated Testing Terminals with touch screens.

The BMV has made the foreign language tests available in many branches throughout the state.  A full list of the branches offering foreign language touch screen testing is available at www.in.gov/bmv/3213.htm.

In addition to Japanese, the BMV Operator Knowledge Test (commonly called “written test”) is also available in Arabic, Burmese, Chin, German, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

A June 23, 2014 article from the Indianapolis Star entitled “Jobs From Foreign Companies Big in Indy” cited a Brookings Institute study that showed that more than 145,000 jobs in Indiana, which is nearly six percent of Indiana’s private-sector workforce, is the result of foreign investment.  Additionally, the City of Indianapolis ranks 16th among the 100 largest metro areas for jobs created by foreign companies, which is 6.5 percent of all private sector jobs.

Commissioner Snemis said: “Consistent with the vision of Governor Pence and Lieutenant Governor Ellspermann to bring international jobs to Indiana, and their trade missions around the world, Indiana has become an attractive option for foreign business.  Additionally, Indiana has one of the largest foreign student populations in the country thanks to our outstanding institutions of higher learning.  As a result, Indiana is a proud partner in the global business community.  We welcome business leaders and students from all nations, and we hope that our efforts will play a small part in welcoming more investment in Indiana.”
